Observing the observer

I have made my first visit to the archive and library of the Magnus Hirschfeld Society. It is a very rich collection, and it will be very interesting to work with it through the following weeks.

After my first day, I am left with many ideas and possible paths further with my project. What struck me most at the first meeting with the material, is the role of the scientist. Just like the Muybridge Series that I wrote about some weeks ago, the scientist puts himself as an observer of humanity, himself an neutral outsider. Of course, this is necessary for the scientific process. But it also raises interesting questions about observer and the observed, power and submission, – and as here, when the scientific subject is human sexuality – even about voyeurism. And of course – the same can be said about me, assuming the role of the observing artist.
